An ode to those who need a break

Yesterday I was texting with a salesperson who was following up on me. The first conversation we had happened one month ago. Despite his being diligent and caring with his customers, I was sick and unable to text him back.

How sick a person must be not to have any energy to type, “thanks, I got the package. It’s ok”? I was off the office, but the show must go on at home, and the family must be taken care of.

Paid sick days are fantastic. Every employee in every company worldwide should have them as part of their benefits package. They are more important than retirement plans or stock options. We live in the present, not 30 years ago.

There are trendy diseases that are not new at all. They’ve always been there but unnoticed. Let’s talk about burnout.

Fifteen years ago, a friend fell into the hospital because of the flu. She was 20. How on earth a 20yo healthy woman needs to spend three days in a hospital room?

The cold was just a cover. All she needed was proper sleep, a few hot meals, and some time on her own. Doctors knew that being the oldest sister in Latin America means to be another mother in the family. Little did we know about burnout back then. It was unthinkable to “just need a break.”

Today, awareness of health care, finding life-work balance, and self-care are saving lives.

I celebrate those advocates for more paid vacation days in emerging countries because they are more needed where 9 to 5 is a utopia, and after ten working hours, parents face more workload at home.

I’ll dare to write some unsolicited advice to working-in tech moms: take a break.

You’ll enjoy it, and it will benefit everyone around you. You’ll need the energy to text your vendors back and pick up your kids at school. Enjoy the weekend or just go for a coffee chat with friends or yourself. You’ll discover that, aside from the “you’re selfish” feeling, the time spent with yourself for your wellbeing reloads you, and the connection with your inner peace keeps you healthy.
